Larry Vogel — The Photo Exchange
Interview 2010
The Photo Exchange was born out of a simple but powerful idea: photographers needed a place to buy, sell, and trade equipment and knowledge without the barriers of the traditional retail market. Larry Vogel co-founded the organization 22 years before this interview, and in that time it grew into a cornerstone of the Colorado photography community.
In this Photo Talk conversation, Larry traces the history of the Photo Exchange from its scrappy beginnings to its role as a community hub for photographers at every level. He talks about the relationships built over decades of transactions, the way the organization adapted to the rise of digital photography, and the philosophy of mutual support that has always been at its core.
Larry also reflects on the broader changes he has witnessed in photography culture over his career — the democratization of the medium, the shift from film to digital, and what has and hasn't changed about what makes a great photograph.
