Life at 10,000 Feet

© 2001 by Kent Gunnufson

Ever wonder what it would be like to life in a ski town? Life in the high country of Colorado is different than any other place on earth and has evolved over time. Life at 10,000 Feet tells the story of those living in Ski country USA.

The seventies and eighties were an enormous growth period for the Rocky Mountain ski areas and populations grew dramatically during this period. The lifestyles of those living in these areas also have changed. I remember taking my daughter trick or treating the first Halloween in Breckenridge. Nearly ninety percent of the doors we knocked on were either not there, didn't know it was Halloween, or forgot. I saw maybe two or three other kids also trying to scare up some candy. Today, there are hoards of kids, just like any other city community, swarming from house to house. There are increasingly less singles and more families in the high country greatly affecting the since of community.

Groceries, clothing and other supplies were not widely available and their inflated value significantly increased the cost of living. Today, several grocery chains, factory outlets and discount department stores bring economically priced goods and services to the community. Initially, we had to travel over the treacherous Loveland Pass to shop in Denver. Today, a four lane modern interstate highway travels through the longest high tunnel in the world to make a short commute to Denver. All streets were dirt when I first arrived, except for the state highway running through town. Now all of the town's streets are paved, have street lights and sidewalks. Breckenridge has become a model society. This documentary is a collection of interviews with a variety of friends and high-country locals.
