President
Gerald Ford I wrote him to see if he would help me in my endeavor. A
week later, I get this letter without a stamp: Instead, it
had a presidential signature. Boy, was I excited reading
President Ford's letter granting me an interview at his
Beaver Creek home. More
Carlton
Fulton
A Breckenridge miner in 1898.
No
matter how difficult living at this altitude may appear
today, the lives of those a hundred years ago were even
rougher. The following unedited story, as written in Carl
Fulton's own words, confirms even the most imaginative
speculations of the lives whose remnants still haunt the
high-country valleys and ridges.More
Harold
Horn Locally
born 76 year-old property manager and miner.
"I
tell ya, the mother lode has not been found yet! It's up
here (in Summit County) somewhere. The millions of dollars
in gold already mined have not even scratched the surface of
what is left." Harold Horn's eyes widen as he explains
the potential of his mining operation at the old Cashier
Mine up Brown Gulch. As he pulls a vial from his pocket and
displays some wire gold taken from his placer operations, a
grin slips across Harold's previously blank poker face.
"There's more where this came from." More

"I
designed it, built it, and did everything. I didn't hire a
contractor. I did all of it except for the plumbing. I
buried part of the house and everything is free form. I did
all the sculpturing. I'm just trying to show what can be
done. More

"True,
I was asked not to return to Aspen. This was a result of an
incident that occurred back in my salad days, as it were. I
perform what we like to think of as "balletica."
Dancing. Balletica is ballet...We did a little dance
referred to by most people as the anchovy dance; done as an
anchovy would dress, with very little. But he covers his
`privates' with aluminum foil and wraps the rest of himself
in cellophane, clear plastic or whatever. So you can
imagine! More
Bob and Kitty Bennet Our Neighbors
The whole community was disappointed to hear that the Bennetts were leaving. Before they left, we went up to the Overlook Restaurant just above our homes for one last visit. More

In
regards to the typical municipal utilities, I provide my own
utilities and am self sufficient. Actually, my water supply
isn't all that complicated. The cold water line runs from my
sink to all the way out at the stream. This winter I had
really great success with all my systems. For the first time
the water didn't freeze all winter, and my freeze alarm
system went off only once. More

"Once
when I was racing in Aspen, I caught my tip on the last gate
and it kind of flipped me upside down and I slipped into the
4X4's that was holding up the finish banners. They didn't
have them padded real well. I broke four transverse
processes in my back More

Frieze Lady
carpenter and cabin dweller.
"So
I got a job as an apprentice carpenter at St. John's
Condominium. It was fun. I probably spend an extra two and a
half to three hours a day more doing chores than someone
living in a regular house. I get up at five to go to work.
You know, I have to heat the water first. Being compulsive
as I am, I have to take showers and clean every day because
of my trade. More

I like to do some mining at my mine I've been working for
about five years. I do placer mining and that includes
dredging and panning. I have twelve of them and one's right
off of the highway just below Hoosier pass. Well I find gold
every year and found a couple pounds this year. More

Zepplin The Artist
Definitely,
my contact to the environment is through my art. For me, it
totally enhances my experience with the outdoors. It's like
finding a partner and dancing to music. My partner is my art
and the outdoors is my life. More

"Well, I think it (Breckenridge) is a neat old town. It's
kind of western. I remember going out for ice-cream and
taking walks. Yah, and riding my bike and playing video
games. I like to skateboard a lot at the town park and the
tennis courts. More

"Well,
I get up about four-thirty in the morning. The horses have
to be ready by six-thirty. Get up and put all the horses in
a little pen. And then, you put all the halters on them. And
then, you take them all out and give them grain. Then you
brush them and saddle them. Then you take them out and bring
more in and start over. More

"I was just totally assaulted by the noise, the smells, the
people, just no peace at all. So I just had to say `I'm
getting on a plane this afternoon and leaving. I can't be in
New York any longer. 'That was the last time I went to New
York till this spring. More
